Post-Surgical Mobility & Back Pain

Following recovery from abdominal surgery, the healing process does not always restore full, comfortable movement (Brinkers et al 2021).

Whether you are recovering from a caesarean section or another abdominal procedure, persistent restrictions in the abdominal fascia and scar tissue can contribute to ongoing back, thoracic, and neck pain — often in ways that are not immediately obvious.

Research indicates that the relative risk of developing back pain is increased by approximately 47% following visceral (abdominal) surgery, with the lumbar spine being the most frequently affected region.

After caesarean delivery specifically, the incidence of low back pain is significantly higher than after vaginal delivery in the early postpartum weeks, and prevalence studies suggest that between 30% and 50% of women experience back pain following a caesarean section. These symptoms are not always short-lived: post-surgical adhesions and altered movement patterns can contribute to persistent back pain that emerges or continues years after the original operation.

As a GOsC registered Osteopath, I use gentle, hands-on techniques — including myofascial release and soft tissue manipulation — to address restrictions in the abdominal wall, scar tissue, and surrounding connective tissue. The aim is to improve tissue mobility, reduce compensatory strain through the spine and pelvis, and support your body in restoring more efficient, stable movement patterns.

What treatment may help with:

  • Reduced mobility or stiffness following caesarean section or abdominal surgery

  • Persistent low back pain that may be linked to post-surgical scar tissue or adhesions

  • Thoracic and neck pain arising from postural compensation after surgery

  • Improving biomechanical stability and confidence in movement during recovery

Important note on suitability: I only treat patients whose surgical wounds and fully healed and who have no signs of active infection. If you are unsure whether Osteopathy is appropriate for your stage of recovery, please contact me to discuss your situation before booking.
