Frequently asked questions
How many treatments will I need?
How many treatments will I need?
Most uncomplicated problems require between 3 and 5 sessions to alleviate your symptoms. More complicated problems require more. Serious or recurrent problems may require follow up treatment that takes place on a monthly basis until we are both satisfied that you have stabilized.
While we fully respect each individual patients treatment goals, we are legally required to advise you on the best care for your specific condition.
Does treatment hurt?
Does treatment hurt?
Treatment does not cause any pain to a baby patient and is quite unspectacular.
Treatment of adults is usually painless. We use a number of different manual treatment approaches that are virtually painless. However, some discomfort may be experienced during soft tissue techniques - patients often describe this as a "good" pain. You are encouraged to tell the Osteopath if any part of the examination or treatment cause you undue discomfort.
How will I feel after the treatment?
How will I feel after the treatment?
A normal response to treatment is to feel a little looser or lighter following a treatment. If your problem is inflamed, then you may still feel sore or stiff following the treatment.
For the following 2-3 days you may feel pain and soreness as the tissue congestion drains out of the effected tissues and your body sends its self healing mechanisms to the injured area. These reactions range from being mild to severe depending upon how inflamed your problem is and how much healing your body needs to do to repair your problem.
Do I need to remove clothing?
Do I need to remove clothing?
Yes, you will need to remove clothing so that the Osteopath can assess the part of your body that is hurting and your spine. It is recommended that you wear appropriate underwear. You may consider bringing a pair of shorts or loose fitting tracksuit bottoms to change into. Female patients will always have a towel placed over them when they are on the treatment table. Every effort will be made to respect your modesty.

It depends on your problem. There are many different causes of back problems - ranging from relatively simple ones to very complicated ones. Therefore, different problems require more treatment and more changes to your own lifestyle habits than others.
Do I still have to pay if it turns out that my problem cannot be helped with Osteopathic treatment
Do I still have to pay if it turns out that my problem cannot be helped with Osteopathic treatment
In short - yes. We are proud of our expertise and the time we allow to assess complex cases. The clinical assessment process that we provide for patients is usually far more thorough than NHS and private GPs and consultants (who only allow 5-15 minutes).
Whether your problem is suitable for Osteopathic treatment or not we will give you our opinion of the most likely cause of your problem/symptoms and the best route that you should take in treating your problem. If a referral letter is required then you will be charged a £25 admin fee for the referral letter.
Compared to private GPs, Neurology and Orthopedic consultants (who charge £250 for 15 minutes) we are in fact good value for money.
